Zuhd: The Freedom of Owning Nothing That Owns You

You know…. There is a strange irony about the modern world. Never before has humanity possessed so much, yet never have people seemed so possessed.
We have devices that fit entire libraries into our palms today… Yet our attention has become shorter than ever. We have refrigerators overflowing with food, yet we remain spiritually hungry. We have more comforts than kings once dreamed of, yet anxiety has become an epidemic.
Maybe the problem was never that we owned too little.
Perhaps the problem is that too much owns us. The scholars called the cure Zuhd.
Unfortunately, many misunderstand it. Some imagine a man wearing patched clothes, refusing wealth, living in isolation, detached from every joy life offers. But that is not what zuhd means.
Zuhd is not the abandonment of the world. It is the abandonment of the world’s ownership over your heart.
